Description
49, 51, and 53 Damgate Street is a house dating from the 17th century and later. It is constructed of brick, possibly with a timber-framed first floor. The ground floor is whitewashed, while the first floor is rendered and whitewashed. The building has a pantiled roof and stands two storeys high with a dormer attic, arranged in three bays. A panelled door is located to the right of centre within a deep recess. To the left, there are two late 18th-century sash windows, and to the right, there is one horned replacement sash, all featuring glazing bars and earlier flush frames. There are sporadic remains of a first-floor platband, which may indicate the course of an underbuilt jetty. The first floor has three sash windows with glazing bars. The gabled roof has been rebuilt with a lower pitch than originally intended and features three flat-topped dormers with casements. There is an internal gable-end stack to the south on a high exposed plinth. The north gable wall was rebuilt in the late 19th century. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
