Description
The garden walls and gate piers located immediately south-west of Gowthorpe Manor House date from the 16th to 18th centuries and are constructed of brick and flint. The walls enclose a garden measuring approximately 30 by 35 meters. To the south, there is a gateway flanked by two large rusticated brick piers, each topped with overhanging caps and small stone ball finials.
The wall to the west of the gate piers features a partly exposed external face of whole flint, while the internal face is made of brick in an irregular bond. This wall also has two shaped brick gables, indicating the former presence of attached buildings that have since been lost. The wall to the east of the gate piers has a rebuilt external face, with the internal face made of 18th-century brick arranged in Flemish bond.
The interior faces of the return walls to the west and east are both made of brick and include four small segmental-headed recesses. The external face of the east return is constructed in English garden wall bond and features a small semi-circular headed doorway to the north. The external face of the west return consists of broken flint, erratics, and some limestone, with later brick added to the upper courses. There is a wide attached plinth to the north made of 17th-century brick.
The enclosing wall to the north has a brick internal face and a broken flint external face, which incorporates re-used dressed limestone. Additionally, there is a pergola supported by four square columns made of stone dressed flint.
