Description
The Garden House is a 17th-century house that features a combination of rendered and colorwashed timber framing with brick and pantiles. It has four sections and a central chimney bay, and is a single storey with an attic. The main facade faces east and has a plinth made of brick and flint, with part of the facade encased in brick on the left side. The first section includes a doorway on the left and a two-light casement window on the right. The second section has a partially panelled glazed door with glazing bars and an attached glazed porch supported by 19th-century rustic wood columns. The third section features a 19th-century three-light casement window with a transom, while the fourth section has three-light leaded casements, one of which has a plain light. There are raking roof dormers above the second and third sections. The left gable has an offset wall above the eaves level that contains a loft doorway, and the right side has a two-light attic window with pintle hinges. The rear of the house, which faces the common, has two 19th-century three-light openings with transoms.
Inside, there is a staircase located at the rear of the stack. The timber frame includes curved braces at the front and rear of the third section, and there is a partition between the third and fourth sections that has two doorways. The tie beam in the third section features lambs tongue stops, while the bridging beam in the first section is made of round timber. The second section has 18cm ceiling joists, and the fourth section includes straight braces, with a partition that has wavy splat ventilation bars above the doorway. The roof structure consists of a two-tier design with 8cm rafters and collars, along with staggered tenoned purlins.
