Description

This is a barn located approximately 40 meters west of Gowthorpe Manor House, dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of brick and covered with pantiles. The barn features five steads and crowstepped gables, with a roof that has been retiled. The plinth is made in Flemish bond with a rounded cap, and there is a large moulded platband. The lower walls are in English bond, while the upper walls are in Flemish bond.

The principal facade faces south and has large doors leading to the fourth stead. To the right of these doors, below the platband, are openings with chamfered brick surrounds. The first stead has two openings, each with two renewed brick mullions. The second stead contains vertical slits in blocked openings, and the third stead has a rectangular opening with five brick mullions, some of which have been renewed. Above the platband, there is a blocked opening and a shuttered loft opening with a segmental head. To the right of the doors, there is another blocked opening with a vertical slit.

The right return features a platband and a rectangular opening to the gable with seven brick mullions, some renewed, along with a small blocked square opening above. The left return also has a platband and is constructed in Flemish bond throughout. Any later lean-to additions have been removed, and there is a rectangular opening to the gable with a chamfered brick surround and six brick mullions, some renewed. A square hood mould has been removed.

At the rear, there is an additional lean-to to the northwest and an open cartshed lean-to to the northeast. There is an opposing doorway with brick walls under a lean-to roof. The plinth at the rear is in English bond, and to the right, there are two rectangular openings with chamfered brick surrounds, four brick mullions, and transoms. To the left, there are two similar openings with six mullions and transoms, with the right one having two lights blocked.

Inside, the barn features 18th-century roof ties with braced wall posts and a three-tier roof with collars, with the second tier being braced.
