Description
Chapel-in-the-Field Methodist Church is a church built in 1880 by E. Boardman. It is constructed of brick with a slate roof and is a single-storey building that includes a gallery and a single-storey office at the rear. The church has three bays, with the central bay being wider and projecting. This central bay features a corbelled modillion brick pediment with block finials. The building has rusticated brick quoins and horizontal rusticated brickwork up to door-head height. The central doorway is topped with a semi-circular stone-faced arch, and above it is a 4-light window with a semi-circular arch and curvilinear tracery, both recessed within a triple order arch.
The outer bays also have rusticated brick quoins and a heavy cornice surrounding a recessed panel. Each outer bay contains a 2-light lower window with metal glazing bars and a raised brick segmental arch, as well as a 2-light upper window with metal glazing bars, a simple traceried semi-circular head, and a raised brick arch. The sides of the church have six bays with identical window and pilaster treatments as the outer bays.
Inside, the church features an ornate cast-iron balustrade to the balcony and pulpit, with an organ framed by two Corinthian pilasters. There are benches on the ground floor and raking in the gallery.
