Description

Spilsby Methodist Church is a Methodist chapel built in 1877-1878 by Charles Bell, designed in the Geometric style. It is constructed from yellow stock brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The gable end faces the street and includes tall stepped gable buttresses, with a central doorway accessed by six steps. The double doors have a traceried circle in the pointed tympanum, and there is a double stepped arch made of roll moulded bricks with a gablette above. Above the entrance, there is a six-light Geometric traceried window, and in the gable, there are three stepped trefoil-headed louvred lancets, along with a plate traceried circle in a pointed opening.

The side front of the church has buttresses that define six bays, each featuring two-light windows with segmental heads and two-light pointed windows at the gallery level. At the rear, there is a two-storey former caretaker's house with plain sash windows.

Inside the chapel, there is a continuous upper gallery supported by cast iron columns with floriate capitals. The wooden balustrade has narrow piers and pointed openings. The wide-span roof is arch-braced, featuring quatrefoils in the spandrels, and is supported on carved stone corbels, tied together with iron rods. The raised octagonal pulpit has a shafted pedestal and panels decorated with cut-out circles, along with narrow stairs that have turned balusters. The pews are all contemporary, and the organ, made by Foster and Andrews of Hull, is dated 1878. The entrance porch retains its original doors and side panels, has a tiled floor, and includes a pair of commandment boards.
