Description
The United Reformed Church, built in 1869 and later by Boardman, serves as a church, Sunday School, assembly rooms, and offices. It is constructed of gault brick with a slate roof. The church is a single-storey building with a gallery, while the Sunday School and offices rise to three storeys. The church's facade facing Princes Street features three bays, designed in an a.b.a. format with Corinthian pilasters and a pediment that includes an oculus. The central bay has an entrance flanked by polished granite Corinthian columns and a semi-circular arch made of inscribed moulded bricks. The outer bays contain two-light windows, while the inner bay has three-light windows, both with decorated moulded brick semi-circular arches. A scroll moulded brick string course runs along the facade.
At the rear, there are three bays of sash windows with glazing bars and flat gauged brick arches, flanking a central pedimented section. The later offices to the west feature four bays facing Princes Street, a six-bay west elevation, and a five-bay south elevation with a central pedimented bay. The ground floor is rusticated brick with quoins, and the upper floors have two-light windows with segmental or semi-circular moulded brick arches, along with a moulded brick string course at the first and second floor levels and a moulded brick modillion cornice at the eaves.
The interior of the church is intact, showcasing an ornate cast iron balustrade to the gallery, ground floor benches, and a raked gallery. It also features a pulpit and organ case, along with a heavy panelled plaster coved ceiling. A lantern light illuminates the Sunday School, which has a cast iron ballustraded gallery with school rooms branching off. The staircases are adorned with cast iron balusters. The caretaker's office is located to the rear and east of the church, comprising two storeys and three bays. It has a doorway at the extreme right with a partly glazed door and a rubbed brick flat arch, along with one ground floor window in the left-hand bay. The building features sash windows throughout with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches, and internally, there is a 17th-century timber framed wall.
