Description

No. 9 Princes Street is a Grade II* listed building that was originally used for an unknown purpose and is now used as offices. The structure dates back to the early 19th century and features a 15th-century undercroft. It is built of red brick with a plinth and has a pantile roof, situated on a corner site. The building stands three storeys high and has two bays, with the right-hand bay recessed. This bay contains a panelled door with 20th-century glazing, flanked by detached Doric columns and pilasters that support a frieze. Above the door is a semi-elliptical fanlight with Adam tracery and a rubbed brick arch. The sash windows have glazing bars, rubbed brick flat arches, and moulded timber surrounds. The window above the door features curvilinear glazing bars in the top sash and a rubbed brick semi-circular arch. The corner of the building curves into Redwell Street.

The undercroft is constructed of brick and consists of two bays and two end half-bays, which are terminated by later walls that run at right angles to the street line. It has a high, pointed barrel-vault profile with rectangular section cross-ribs and includes four side chambers, with an opening above that aligns with the main space. The original entrance to the undercroft is located in the north-west corner. The building is designated as Grade II* due to the significance of the undercroft, which is part of an important group within the City Walls.
