Description

Trinity Methodist Church is a large Methodist chapel built in 1877. It features an ashlar front with rock-faced sides and has a hipped slate roof. The building is two storeys high with a five-bay gabled front and six-bay sides. The central three bays of the front project forward and are topped with an open pediment that has a bracketed cornice. There is a bold eaves cornice on the flanking bays, and the corners and central projection are accentuated by giant pilasters with highly elaborate foliated capitals.

On the first floor, there is a cornice above three central round-arched doorways that are accessed by seven steps, with a flanking iron rail on a dwarf wall. The doors are double with six fielded panels and semi-circular fanlights. An enriched impost band features foliage, fruit, and birds. Above the doors is a triple group of round-arched windows with square-headed lights, blind tympana, and colonnettes with enriched capitals, as well as elongated and enriched keystones. The inscription "TRINITY 1877 CHURCH" is located above the raised capitals. The flanking bays also have round-arched windows with an enriched impost band, while the side elevations feature round-arched windows and square-headed basement windows, all with marginal glazing. The enrichments throughout the building are particularly elaborate, showcasing a high standard of carving.

Inside, the church has a horseshoe-shaped raking gallery with a panelled front supported by slender cast iron columns that have foliated and floral capitals. There is a notable organ case at the front, flanked by paired pilasters with elaborate capitals. A large pulpit is positioned with stairs on each side, and the communion area in front is flanked by choir stalls. The pews are arranged to focus on the pulpit. The ceiling is divided into large panels with central roses and elaborate plaster ribs, and it features a dentilled and bracketed cornice.
