Description

The railway bridge over the River Calder, part of the Mirfield-Cooper Bridge line, was built around 1840. It was designed by engineer George Stephenson, with supervision by T. L. Gooch, for the Manchester and Leeds Railway. The bridge is constructed from rock-faced stone with rusticated dressings. It features four segmental arches spanning the river, along with an additional five arches to the west and two to the east, all resting on bull-nosed abutments. There is a string course at the base of the stone parapet. A later steel bridge is located on the south side, but it is not included in this listing.
