Description

The gates to Stradsett Hall, including the railings, date from the mid-18th century and are made of gault brick and wrought iron. The structure features two square section piers on stepped plinths topped with flat moulded cornices, upon which stand fluted ashlar urns. Fillets with scrolled tops support the central gates, which are divided into three parts, with the center section hinged. The gates have square section verticals between unadorned square stiles, and the inner two verticals of the side panels are decorated with scrolled and square panel designs that run the full height. The bottom panels feature a dog rail with pointed arrowheads. The lockrail is adorned with a pair of bifurcating S scrolls in each of the three sections. A continuous square section top rail supports a ramped scrolled overthrow, which is decorated with running repoussée sheet acanthus.

On either side of the main gates are additional gate piers of a similar design but shorter in height, each topped with ball finials on incurving square plinths. Between the main and subsidiary piers are elaborated railings that match the central gates. The square section railings rest on a brick plinth and extend to the left and right, terminating in brick piers that are identical to the subsidiary gate piers. From the western pier, ramped brick walling returns towards the house and is also included in the listing.
