Description
The Gates to West Park are gatepiers and gates dating from the early 18th century, likely designed by Robert Bakewell, with early 19th-century gatepiers. They were relocated to West Park in the early 20th century. The structure is made of ashlar, wrought iron, and timber.
At the center, there are a pair of tall square ashlar piers featuring moulded bases, raised and fielded panelled sides, and a full entablature with a fluted frieze, central paterae, and a moulded cornice. On either side, there are lower plain piers with moulded bases and cornices. The side entrances have four-panelled timber doors, with the top two panels of each door filled with bobbin balusters.
The central gates are made of wrought iron and have a segmental head. They feature an arrow head dograil with an additional rail above, adorned with fleur-de-lys finials. The standards and top rail are designed with openwork, incorporating linking squares and scrolls. An elaborate overthrow showcases bifurcated scrollwork and a central onion-shaped panel with the initials 'RB' in a circle, topped with a swan finial.
Historically, these gates were purchased from Aston Hall in Aston on Trent, Derbyshire, and were erected at West Park in 1928.
