Description
The front railings, wall, and gates at No. 15 High Street in Stanstead Abbots date from 1752 and the early 19th century. They are made of wrought iron and are set on low red brick walls constructed in English bond, featuring an ovolo plinth and heavy Portland stone coping stones. The top consists of tall wrought iron railings with elongated spear tops, divided into bays by heavier forked standards topped with cast urns. The central gate has scrolled standards, an overthrow, and two cast finials. One gate is simple, with short spikes on the crossbar and bottom rail. The early 19th-century gate features three bays of railings leading from Wend, six bays to the main gate, and three bays beyond. This gate is similar in style to the previous one but has standards infilled with a diagonal pattern of bars and four cast finials, with a central urn finial likely from a replaced standard.
