Description
The Mill is a corn water mill that has been converted into workshops. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1881 and converted to steam power after 1890, ceasing milling operations in 1926. This tall, four-story mill is constructed of yellow brick and is located beside a mill stream, likely on the site of a mill recorded in the Domesday Book. It features a wide slate roof and is arcaded with round arches that rise to the eaves level. The sides have five bays, while the ends have four bays, each gable containing circular windows. Decorative tie plates are present at each floor level. The windows have three-ring segmental arches, stone sills, and metal frames. At the northern end, there is a high single-storey boilerhouse made of yellow brick and slate, which has a canted end facing the road and a tapering square chimney that rises above the mill, topped with a brick necking and cornice. The boilerhouse includes two round-arched windows with cast iron frames set in rectangular sunk panels on the east and north ends and has been extended to the rear in similar panelled brickwork. The Mill is a prominent landmark at the junction of High Street and Roydon Road.
