Description

Paradise Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1600, with alterations in the 18th century and likely reduced to its present size. It is constructed of carstone with brick dressings and a slate roof. The south front has two storeys and three bays, with a noticeable set-off at the first floor level. A central door is sheltered beneath a semi-circular arch and a fanlight dating to around 1850. There are segmental-headed sash windows from the mid-19th century on either side of the door. The first floor has three similar sashes, with the flanking windows set within original ovolo moulded brick architraves. The gabled roof features internal gable stacks. The east gable wall shows two set-offs. Octagonal stepped brick corner turrets, built on bell-based plinths, rise to moulded circular finials with ball caps. A central inscription plaque, beneath a moulded pediment, records the construction of the house by Francis Parlet in 1600. A moulded string course emphasizes the second-floor set-off. The gable head incorporates 18th-century tumbling. The west gable wall also has two set-offs and three early 19th-century casements within original ovolo moulded brick surrounds. The gable head here is entirely 18th century, showing tumbling. To the north are early 19th-century extensions of one storey and an attic. Inside, there are numerous moulded bridging beams, with ovolo and hollow chamfers, sometimes with fillets and terminating in ogee stops.
