Description
The gates, gate piers, and railings at St Margaret's Churchyard date from around 1740. They feature stone piers with wrought-iron gates and railings set on a brick plinth course. There are two square stone rusticated piers, each adorned with fluted and reeded pilaster strips that rise to square coping stones. The finials on the piers are urns topped with obelisks. The gates have diamond section verticals, which are doubled below the middle rail, and an arched brace that creates a semi-circle below the middle rail when the gates are closed. Pointed finials are positioned above the top rail. A simple arched overthrow supports a 20th-century electric light, and square section hangers are used. The railings extend north to Saturday Market Place, return east to the north aisle of the church, and extend south, returning east to the first building in Priory Lane. The railings feature diamond section verticals with square stiles and urn finials on the stiles. Where the railings meet the gate piers, the connection is highlighted by a rising scroll. To the immediate left of the northern gate pier, there is a square lamp bracket supported by bifurcating square section supports.
