Description
The gates and railings located to the west of St Nicholas' churchyard on St Ann's Street date back to 1749. They are made of wrought iron and are set on a brick plinth wall. The main gate, positioned to the south, is supported by gault brick piers topped with moulded stone coping and bulbous urn finials. The gates feature square section verticals and a panel middle rail adorned with a subsidiary fleur-de-lys crest. These gates are border-hung and include an elaborate ramped overthrow with scrolled tendrils and the date 1749 displayed on the top rail.
A low red brick plinth wall with ashlar coping extends north along the street to a secondary gate located in front of the church's west door. This double gate is hung on heavy stiles that also terminate in urn finials, featuring a scrolled middle rail, square section verticals, and a scrolled overthrow that rises to a square lamp bracket. The railings continue north to a plain north gate, with the railings themselves having square section verticals set diagonally, and their stiles also being square section topped with urn finials.
