Description
The Exorcists House is a Grade II listed house located at No. 7 Chapel Lane in King's Lynn, dated 1635. The building is constructed of brick with some flint and has a whitewashed east front. It features a plaintile roof and stands two storeys tall. On the left side, there is a 20th-century door, while to the right, a three-light horizontally sliding sash window is present, accompanied by a fixed part that also consists of three lights. The first floor has a three-light casement window. The gabled roof adds to the structure's character.
The south side of the house is obscured by ivy but appears to have a three-light casement window on each floor, with a straight gable. The north side showcases a prominent Dutch gable, which features a platband at the first floor level and a blind oval window in the gable head. The gable is supported by deep kneelers and has a lower sweep that culminates in an open pediment, displaying the date 1635 in iron letters. A rebuilt brick stack rises from the apex of the pediment. To the west, there is a lower gabled range accessed through a door beneath a lean-to pantiled outshut, with a three-light mullioned casement window on the first floor.
The style and declared date of the Dutch gable are significant, representing an early example of this architectural type.
