Description

John of Gaunt's House is a Grade II listed building, likely dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of English bond brick and flint, topped with a thatched roof and has a rectangular plan. The facade features two storeys and three bays, with a flint plinth at the base. The central doorway has reveals that are rendered to imitate ashlar, with a blank panel above it. On either side of the doorway are five-light brick mullioned and transomed windows, both featuring ovolo moulding; the left window was renewed around 1970 and both have diamond leaded panes and hood moulds above.

The upper floor contains three additional mullioned and transomed windows: the central window has three lights while the others have four lights, all of which have been renewed. The windows have rendered reveals and the building has crowstepped gables. There are gable end stacks with bases for paired polygonal shafts, and the right gable has two blocked attic lights with a hood mould, with the gable above having been renewed.

At the rear, there is a single light opening next to the stack, a renewed five-light mullioned window above a break in the flint plinth, and two renewed three-light mullioned windows. The first floor features three renewed three-light mullions, with all openings having rendered reveals and hood moulds.

Inside, all internal walling was renewed around 1970, and the stairs have been replaced. The right-hand ground floor window and the light to the former stair in the left-hand gable wall are original. The inner face of the external walls is made of flint, with diapering in one upper room, and the roof dates from the 19th century.
