Description
The lychgate, located 15 metres south-east of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Docking, was built around 1875, possibly designed by architect Frederick Preedy, who also restored the church. This structure is made of stone, wood, and slate, featuring a rectangular plan and a single-storey gabled roof in the High Victorian Gothic style. It has battered plinth walls on the north and south sides, a wooden dado, and consists of three bays with trefoil wind-bracing, along with half bays that return to the east and west. The east and west gable arches are adorned with trefoil cusps, and there is a crown post with struts at the apex of the roof, which is supported by a single purlin and features trefoil section wind brace struts. The lychgate is included for its group value with the church.
