Description

The lychgate to the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin is a late 19th-century structure. It features a timber frame resting on low sandstone ashlar footings and is topped with a peg-tile roof. The lychgate is designed in the Gothic style, with side walls consisting of four narrow bays that are boarded below the middle rail and open above, showcasing wavy braces. The sills extend to the front and back to support wavy tension braces. Both the front and back gable ends have arch-braced tie beam trusses, with square crown posts above and wavy down braces. The steeply pitched roof extends beyond both ends and is adorned with cusped bargeboards, topped by a wrought iron cross. The lychgate also features low double gates, which include wavy braces and well-crafted original shaped iron hinges. This lychgate is part of a notable group of listed buildings surrounding the Church of St Mary.
