Description

This is a pair of adjacent headstones located against the east wall of the chancel of the Church of St Mary the Virgin. They are dated 1733 and 1735 and commemorate William and Ann Coyte. Both headstones are similar upright slabs made of sandstone, standing approximately 650 millimeters high. Each has a shaped head with carvings above the inscriptions, which are in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The left headstone, dedicated to Ann Coyte who died in 1735, features a carving of a crowned skull with wings. The right headstone, for William Coyte who died in 1733, is adorned with a carving of an anchor in a roundel, flanked by scrolls.
