Description

The walls, gate piers, and gates at the entrance to The Manor were likely built in the 1880s, during renovations for Charles W. Powell. The structure features sandstone ashlar walls and piers, along with timber and iron gates. The original oak gates were replaced with a softwood copy in 1989, reusing the old ironwork. The retaining walls curve inward towards the gateway and rise to the gate piers, which have a chamfered moulding below the coping. The gate piers are square in shape, featuring a deep chamfered plinth and a chamfered cornice. The pair of impressive openwork timber gates each have asymmetrical diagonal braces, with moulded cusped timbers creating a lattice pattern, iron cross-pieces in each panel, and tall, moulded cusped styles. Inside the entrance, on the south side, there is a well-house, also in the same ownership as the neighboring Cottage, constructed of ashlar masonry. This well-house has a doorway featuring a high-quality 17th-century panelled door with richly moulded panels.
