Description

The Lych Gate to the Church of St Mary is likely from the same period as the church, built between 1864 and 1866, and designed by the church architect, Rowell of Newton Abbot. It features local red breccia walls with bathstone dressings that support a timber structure topped with a slate roof. The gate is located below and south of the church. It has low, coped stone walls with an openwork timber superstructure that supports a gabled slate roof with sprocketed eaves. Each side of the timber superstructure consists of three bays of cusped arcading. The gables are adorned with tie beam trusses featuring kingposts, curved braces, and pierced spandrels beneath the ties. The gable ends are decorated with cusped bargeboards that have pierced designs. The roof is constructed with common rafters and diagonal boarding behind them. The gate includes a pair of contemporary openwork timber gates, complete with original hinges, featuring iron verticals below the middle rail, fleur-de-lis finials, and cusped braces above. This lych gate is part of an attractive group from the 1860s that includes the church, rectory, and school.
