Description

Collaton Farmhouse, dating to the late 1840s and early 1850s, is a simplified Tudor-style building, now a house. It is constructed of local red breccia rubble with a slate roof and brick chimney shafts. The farmhouse has a double-depth, U-shaped plan, oriented to face west and situated above a planned farmyard. A south cross-wing houses the kitchen and dining room, along with a service staircase. The north cross-wing contains a parlour and the main staircase, with further service rooms located behind an axial corridor within the main block.

The west front, facing the garden, has a 1:2:2-bay arrangement. The cross-wings are gabled, while the central block features two gabled windows on the first floor and an open ground floor forming a three-bay verandah supported by stone posts and pitched stone paving. Original windows are primarily 2 and 3-light mullioned and transomed windows with moulded mullions and small panes, some with segmental heads. Two windows, one first-floor left and one ground-floor right, have been replaced with later 19th or early 20th century 3-over-3 sash windows. The south return features two gabled first-floor windows with original fenestration, a large projecting shouldered lateral stack, and a wide timber kitchen door. A kitchen window has been reglazed with a 20th century timber plate-glass window. The rear (east) elevation presents the gable end of the south cross-wing to the left and the main block to the right, including a gabled first-floor window and a large gable at the right end. A massive projecting shouldered kitchen stack is present on the wing. Two original first-floor windows remain. A slated pentice, partly infilled with concrete block, and two doorways are found on the ground floor. The north-facing road elevation incorporates a stair window.

Internally, the farmhouse retains an 1870s white marble chimney-piece, some flag floors, and original joinery including doors, shutters, and two stout stick baluster staircases. The kitchen fireplace retains a bread oven with an iron door. It is one of a group of buildings associated with a planned farmyard.
