Description
The Lodge and The Coracle is a late 18th-century house located at the junction of High Street and Wells Street in Docking. Originally a single dwelling, it has now been divided into two separate homes. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with a modern concrete replacement for the original smut pantiles.
It stands two stories high and features five bays arranged in a 2-2-1 bay system. The central section includes two ground floor and two first floor sash windows with glazing bars, all set under flat rubbed brick arches. There is a six-panel raised and fielded door flanked by two fluted pilasters, with panelled reveals, a fanlight, and an arched canopy above. To the east, there are two additional bays with the same arrangement of sash windows under flat rubbed brick arches, complemented by brick raised rusticated pilasters. A wooden eaves cornice runs along the top, and there are two ridge stacks.
To the west, there is a set-back single bay that contains one ground floor and one first floor sash window with glazing bars. Attached to the east is a two-storey range built of flint with brick dressings, finished with a pinkwashed exterior and a red pantile roof. This section features a fine central late 18th-century doorcase with fluted pilasters and a frieze, supported by console brackets. It has a shallow pentice canopy, a three-panel raised and fielded reveal, and a two-panel raised and fielded door with glazed upper panels. The first floor has three 19th-century plate glass sash windows. Additionally, there is a single-storey brick range attached at the east.
