Description

The Old House is an 18th-century house, possibly with an earlier core, located on the south side of The Street in Geldeston. It is constructed of red brick and features pantiled roofs that are hipped at the north end. The building has two storeys and a cellar on the north side, while the south side has 2 and a half storeys, following a double pile plan.

The east facade is divided into two sections, likely representing two separate builds. The left section has 2 and a half storeys and is two windows wide, featuring sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed arches above the openings. The ground floor has a canted bay window with a large cross-casement that also has glazing bars, topped by a lead flat roof behind a parapet. The entrance door is half-glazed and panelled, with a semicircular fanlight that includes decorative glazing bars. This door is framed by a square-headed surround with panelled pilaster strips and console brackets. A later addition is a trellis porch with an elliptical roof and polygonal columns. The eaves are adorned with wooden modillion brackets, and there are two attic dormers with sash windows and cambered roofs. An off-centre chimney stack is positioned along the ridge.

On the right side, there are two storeys with three unequal bays, featuring sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick arches. The ground floor window on this side matches the one in the canted bay. A modillion cornice runs below the eaves parapet, with an off-centre stack on the ridge line and an external stack on the north wall.

The north elevation has three first-floor sash windows with glazing bars, along with one blind opening and one lunette at ground floor level. There is a small single-storey projection with a hipped slated roof. The south wall features a double gable with two sash windows in each gable; both gables are parapeted and have tumbling-in on the southeast gable. The rear elevation displays irregular fenestration of sash windows with glazing bars, a six-panel entrance door with a tall segmental-headed fanlight that also has glazing bars, and two flat-roofed attic dormers with two and three-light casements featuring glazing bars. A cornice with block modillions is present as well. At the northwest corner, there is a lean-to against the parapeted north wall, with a pantiled and glazed roof. Additionally, there is a water pump on the west wall, dated 1784.
