Description
This listing describes a pair of Tett Turrets, which are small military structures built partially below ground. They were designed to provide a protected gun position for a single occupant and feature a rotating cap section that allows for a 360-degree field of fire.
The turrets are made of pre-manufactured reinforced concrete mounted on brick walls. They are arranged in what is thought to be a unique configuration, aligned north-south and linked by a 12-foot long narrow circular tunnel. There is also a short branch tunnel at the center of the linking tunnel that extends westwards, likely providing access to the turrets from a trench at the rear of the site.
The exterior of the turrets consists of low rotating concrete truncated cones, each with a single gun embrasure and several spy holes or slits. These cones are mounted on ball-bearing races, allowing them to be turned. The turret cones rest on concrete slabs supported by rectangular brickwork enclosures. The southern enclosure features an opening in its south side wall.
Inside, the turrets retain steel seat hangars for wooden seats, with one seat believed to still be in place as of 2016.
