Description
The lychgate, located about 10 yards south-west of the Church of St Mary Magdalene, is likely from the 14th century and was restored in the late 19th century. It features a timber frame with lias limestone rubble infill on the sides and a plain tiled roof. The structure has a square plan, with gable ends that showcase chamfered arch-braced roof trusses and a central broad strut above the tie-beam to the collar. The bargeboards are decorated with quatrefoil panels, and there is cusped arcaded infill above the side walls along with brattished wall-plates. The west gable end includes a pair of gates that have pierced quatrefoil panels. This lychgate is similar to, and likely contemporary with, the south porch of the church.
