Description

Church Farmhouse and Church Cottage is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the early 17th century and has undergone alterations and additions in the late 19th century. The structure is timber-framed with rendered infill and a plain tiled roof. It consists of four framed bays aligned north to south, with a central two-bay hall that features a former through-passage and a large chimney positioned between the upper and parlour bay, which has six diagonal 19th-century stacks. There is also an external sandstone chimney at the rear service bay, accompanied by a 19th-century stack.

The building is two storeys high. The framing includes four panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners. The north gable end has small ogee braces in the upper corners. The trusses consist of collar and tie-beams with two collars; the south gable end has two struts to the lower collar, raking struts across the lower corners, and one central strut to the upper collar. The north gable end features three struts to the lower collar and two to the upper collar, along with a concave V-strut in the apex and decorative concave struts in the corners above the tie-beam and lower collar.

On the east front elevation, the fenestration is irregular. The ground floor includes three 2-light casements, two of which are placed beneath a plank weathering, a 3-light casement, and two rectangular lights with cambered heads flanking the entrance. The first floor has three 2-light casements and a 3-light casement. The door located in the through-passage is ledged and battened, also with a plank weathering. There are two brick buttresses supporting the left bay.

Inside, the ground floor of the north bay features two lateral main beams that are chamfered with 5-bar stops. The room above has scrolled and latticed painted decoration on the main beam. A two-bay late 19th-century wing is attached to the north bay at the rear, and the main entrance to Church Cottage is located in its north elevation. Additionally, there is a 20th-century single-storey addition at the rear center. The building is designed so that its upper bay, with its decorative gable end, is closest to the church.
