Description

This is a barn located 27 meters east of the Manor House, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with later alterations and additions. It was built for the Walpole family and is constructed of brick with a thatched roof.

The front elevation faces east and features a long range aligned east-west. It has gabled porches at the east end, each with double doors set beneath shallow brick arches. The brickwork above the arches is tumbled at the eaves level, while the gables have been rebuilt and incorporate metal ties. There are breather vents on the outer sides and between the porches. An outshut has been added to the west, which is not structurally bonded to the main building. Pitching holes are located beside the double doors leading into the offshut, and each gable has pitching holes, with an owl hole above and two ventilation slits below.

Inside, the barn features a 12-bay roof with arch-braced chamfered tie beams supported by wall posts that are bolted to the walls. There are two tiers of staggered purlins with diagonal wind braces. The south porch and threshing bay have a wooden threshing floor, while herringbone brick flooring is found in other areas. This large barn is part of a group that includes the nearby Stock House and Cartshed. Note that the attached stock yard buildings to the south and west are 19th-century structures that have been significantly altered and are not included in the listing.
