Description

The Old Post Office is an early 19th-century former shop constructed of red brick and roofed with slate. It is a double-pile building with a 20th-century extension and a single-storey outshut to the east. The west-facing facade has a double-fronted design. A 20th-century part-glazed door is set within an original 19th-century frame. To either side are double revealed openings with gauged brick elliptical arches, featuring a radial pattern in the spandrel. Above, a blank window is defined by a gauged brick ogee arch. The building’s plan incorporates segmental bays, and the ground floor has full-width windows with glazing bars and flat gauged brick arches. Sash windows with glazing bars are found on the first floor. The windows are curved in plan with the bays. The north elevation has two symmetrical windows at first floor level. At ground floor level, a 20th-century window occupies the original opening, which features a gauged brick arch shaped like a Venetian window head. A four-panel part-glazed door is located to the right. Bracketed eaves are present on the west side. The roof is hipped, with a central stack. A 20th-century wing and lean-to are not of notable architectural interest.
