Description
The barn at Walden Court is a large structure dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with later additions. It features irregular Flemish-bond brickwork and a tiled roof. The interior is divided into three equal parts by two threshing floors, with porches on one side and a lean-to against the main walls on that same side. The barn has a plinth with a bullnose top and a plain string course halfway up the wall, along with clasping corner buttresses at the ends and at the porches. Each main section of the barn has two rows of four slit air vents.
On the right return, there are four slit air vents in the bottom half and two above, along with a central square pitching hole framed by a cambered brick arch. A plain string course runs at the eaves level, with three slit air vents above and two more, plus an oval owl hole at the top of the gable. The right porch features one slit air vent at each level on the right return, elliptical-headed double boarded doors in the center with stone hinge blocks, and a small door cut into the right half. The gable above has been rebuilt.
On the left return, there is a single air vent at the upper level in the front, a central pilaster buttress, and an elliptical-headed boarded door beyond in the thickened wall. The left half of the barn mirrors the right. To the right of the first porch, there is a 20th-century lean-to extension that is not of special interest. Originally, the space between the porches was open-fronted with brick sides projecting from the porches, but it has since been infilled with brick, featuring a sliding door and a window on the left used for feed preparation.
On the left side of the left-hand porch, there are two brick looseboxes and two boarded stable doors in the center, with shuttered windows on each side, all topped with cambered brick arches. The interior consists of eight bays, with low doors opposite the porches featuring elliptical heads and two air vents above. The air vents are splayed inside, and the trusses include tie-beam collars and angle struts, with two pairs of purlins and a square ridge. This barn is a well-preserved example of an early, large brick barn and forms a group with the associated house.
