Description
The Cottage at Poolhill in Newent is probably an 18th-century building. It features a timber frame with red brick and wattle and daub infill, and has a red brick chimneystack at the east end. The roof, which was originally thatched, has been replaced with corrugated asbestos. At the time of inspection in 2001, the sandstone floor tiles were missing. The cottage has a plinth made of pink sandstone and a two-room plan with a chimney at the east end. Inside, there is a central partition, shelving, and a five-plank front door that was detached during the inspection. A narrow enclosed stair is located in the north-west corner. The first floor consists of a single room and a lobby, featuring a two-plank door and intact floorboards. The windows still have their mullions and iron vertical bars. This cottage is now a rare example of a small dwelling that has not been significantly enlarged or altered over time.
