Description

Beggar's Roost is a former pair of semi-detached cottages that have been converted into a single house. It likely dates from the late 18th century or 19th century. The building features spindly timber framing with white-painted brick nogging and lacks jowls on the main posts. It has a thatched roof and is designed in a U shape, with gabled wings and a recessed center. There are slightly set-back lean-tos at each end, covered by the main roof.

The rear of the property has 20th-century extensions. Originally, the building was one room deep and had one and a half stories. The front facade has all late 20th-century windows. On the right side, there is a two-light casement in the extension and a three-light casement in the gable. The boarded front door is located in the right half of the center and is sheltered by a gabled thatched porch supported by shaped brackets. To the left, there is a three-light casement.

On the left gable's right return, there is a circular single-pane window, and a three-light casement is found in the gable, with a boarded door leading to the left lean-to. The first floor features three-light casements in the gables, with St. Andrews cross framing below and two collars with curved V struts above. There are two gabled dormers in the recess, each with a two-light casement. The building has lateral chimneys on the outer face of the main gabled wings, with their bases enveloped by the lean-tos. The exposed base is rendered, with three diamond-set square flues above, featuring oversailing heads.

The first rear extension was added after 1924, as indicated by the 25-inch Ordnance Survey map, and a second extension was added in the late 20th century. The interior has been significantly modified. Overall, Beggar's Roost presents an unusual composition that was designed for architectural effect.
