Description
The Freethorpe War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920. It is made of polished red granite and has a square plan. The memorial features a polished red granite urn sitting atop a four-sided red granite pillar, which has a crown-shaped moulded cap adorned with incised floral motifs. This is set on a red granite plinth, which is supported by a two-stepped stone base. The entire structure is located within a small, gravelled square that is bordered by eight low, decorative iron posts connected by thick chains.
The inscription on the pillar reads: "THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE OF THIS PARISH WHOSE NAMES APPEAR HEREWITH WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE DURING THE GREAT WAR AUG 1914 – NOV 1918 GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS" followed by the names of the fallen.
