Description
Guist War Memorial is a First World War memorial with additions for the Second World War, located in the churchyard southeast of the Church of St Andrew, which is also listed at Grade II*. The memorial is positioned close to the churchyard wall facing Norwich Road.
It features a stone obelisk that rises from a square plinth with a moulded foot, set upon a two-stepped base. The plinth is topped with a gabled cap above a cornice with a cavetto profile.
The plinth's faces display inscriptions and names in raised, leaded lettering. The main inscription is on the south face, which reads: "TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR US IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1919./ 'THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US/ BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY.'" The names of the twelve men who died are inscribed on the east and west faces.
The north face includes the Second World War inscription: "ALSO/ FOR THOSE WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ 1939 - 1945 /" followed by five names.
The memorial is set within a square, gravelled area that is bordered by stone kerbs.
