Description

The Stokenham War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921 and later altered to honor those who fell in the Second World War. It is made from granite and is located within the churchyard of the Church of St Michael and All Angels, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial stands next to the south door of the church and is close to the Grade II listed walls, railings, gate-piers, gates, and overthrow surrounding the churchyard.

The memorial is 2.75 meters high and features a tall granite Latin cross with chamfered edges, positioned on a square plinth with rounded corners, which in turn rests on a three-stepped octagonal base.

The main inscription is located on the north face of the plinth in leaded lettering and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914–1919/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the east and west sides of the plinth. On the south face of the plinth, there is an additional inscription that states: "I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE."

An extra inscription has been added to the north face of the upper step of the base, which reads: "AND OF THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939-1945." The names of the Second World War fallen are recorded on the two adjacent faces of the upper step.
