Description

Peartree Cottage is a house, originally two cottages, dating back to the 18th century. It was converted into two cottages in the 19th century and is now united as one house. The building is constructed from coursed local stone rubble with a gabled slate roof, and end stacks finished in 19th-century brick. It has a two-room plan with an integral rear outshot; the room to the right of the front is heated by a large external stack. The south front has two windows and features segmental stone arches over mid-20th-century windows, with one blocked opening to the centre which appears as a curiously raised and low-proportioned doorway position. The main entrance is located to the rear of the outshot.

Inside, original joists are present, along with 18th-century doors with original fittings. The roof is a four-bay collar-truss design, featuring halved and pegged collars and apexes, and a curved principal rafter in the outshot. A large open fireplace with a timber lintel is on the right, with a former parlour to the left. This room contains fragments of original moulded dado and a fireplace flanked by a panelled cupboard in a moulded architrave to the left, and a semi-circular arched keyed moulded architrave to a cupboard on the right; this contains panelled doors leading to carved shelves and an elaborate shell niche demonstrating provincial 18th-century joinery. The cottage is an early example of a two-room plan with an integral outshot and exhibits some interesting original detail, situated prominently to the north of the church.
