Description
The walls, railings, gatepiers, gates, and overthrow located to the south-southwest and west of the Church of St. Michael are likely from the 19th century. The tall slate rubble retaining wall immediately south of the church supports a churchyard that is at a much higher level than the ground to the south. This wall features battered buttresses with weathered set-offs and slate coping, topped with iron railings that have baluster stanchions and fleur-de-lis finials on the shafts. The wall steps up to a higher level on the right side. At the left end, there is a scrolled iron overthrow and a pair of gates, which also have fleur-de-lis finials on the shafts, along with the maker's name "Lidstone Kingsbridge." The gateway and steps provide access to a ramp leading into the churchyard, and to the west of the gateway, the retaining wall continues along the road, where its saddle back coping has been rendered.
