Description
Mary Ann Cottage is likely a 18th-century cottage, extended in the 20th century. It is constructed of plastered stone and cob, with the north end hung in scantle slates. The roof is thatched, hipped at the north end and gabled at the south end. A projecting rendered stack with a rebuilt brick shaft is located at the north end.
The cottage has a simple two-room plan, facing west. The larger north room has a heating stack, while the smaller south room is unheated. A 20th-century porch provides direct access to the north room from the rear. A small 20th-century outshut is located at the rear, and another at the high north end. The cottage is built into a bank, with a steep slope at the south end and the front.
The west front features a single 20th-century casement window at the centre. The slate-hung north end has a 19th-century two-light casement window. The north end also features the projecting stack and a small outshut with a corrugated iron roof. The rear elevation includes a 20th-century outshut and porch.
The ground floor interior, which was inspected, has plastered walls and ceilings and a later fireplace. A circa 18th-century two-panel door separates the two ground floor rooms. The first floor and roof space were not inspected.
