Description
This is a house, divided into two cottages named Marion and Pilgrims, dating back to the 17th century or earlier, with a circa 18th or early 19th century extension and 19th century alterations. The exterior is of painted stone rubble, with some areas roughcast render. The roof is hipped, covered in Welsh slate, with a rear outshut roofed in corrugated asbestos. There are rear lateral stacks, one with a rendered shaft and another on the left end with a brick shaft. The original plan seems to have been a three-room and through or cross-passage configuration, with the lower end situated on the left. Around the 18th or 19th century, the house was divided into three cottages; the lower end was remodelled and extended with an outshut at the rear. Later in the 20th century, the central cottage and the lower-left-hand cottage were combined into a single dwelling (Pilgrims), and the passage has been converted into a pantry. The front has an asymmetrical five-window arrangement. It features 2-light casement windows with glazing bars and slate sills, along with a pair of small 20th-century windows to the right of the centre. There is a 19th-century panelled door to the right of the centre, with glazed upper panels, and two circa early 19th century panelled doors to the far right, both with flat 20th-century canopies. A blocked doorway, now a window, is located to the left of the centre and likely served as the original entrance to the house. The rear has a 19th-century panelled door and a 20th-century open porch over the outshut, with the main roof extending to cover it. A small 20th-century wing is present at the centre rear, and a rendered lateral stack is on the left side. Inside Pilgrims, the former hall displays chamfered wavy cross-beams without stops, along with a 20th-century brick fireplace on a lateral stack and 18th/19th century joinery. The first floor was not inspected. In Marion, at the high right end, there is a plastered ceiling, a 20th-century brick fireplace in a lateral stack, and an 18th-century two-panel door on the first floor. Chamfered straight principals are visible in the roof space of Marion’s first floor.
