Description
Bintry Mill, including the bridge and miller's house, is a former watermill and miller's residence dating from the 18th century, which underwent significant refurbishment and enlargement in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick, with the rear and west sides colourwashed, while the house facade is rendered. The mill features pantiles, and the house has French pantiles. The fossilized western gable indicates that the house and mill were originally part of a single long block of uniform height.
In the late 19th century, the mill was re-faced, heightened, and widened at the rear, while the house was re-roofed with a shallower pitch. The house has two storeys with an attic and a facade featuring four sash windows with glazing bars set beneath slightly cambered arches. There are two late 19th-century gabled dormers with two-light casements and decorative barge boards, along with a chamfered dentil cornice. The gable end displays fossilized tumbling-in, and the original front door consists of raised and fielded panels within a doorcase that has a pediment on consoles and a double raised keystone. Above the door is an early sash window with wide glazing bars. A slightly later outshut at the rear is accommodated in the 19th-century service wing.
The mill itself has four storeys and features eleven cast iron casement windows with small panes, all set beneath deep segmental arches except on the top floor. There are tall entrances at both the ground and first floor levels, and the gable end retains a fossilized 18th-century gable along with a weatherboarded lucam. To the south of the mill is a road bridge, with the water flowing beneath it. The bridge has a single segmental vault and a parapet with moulded brick coping.
