Description

Norwich Lodges, including gates, railings, and flanking walls, are a pair of identical lodges built around 1910 by G.J. Skipper, located on the west side of Norwich Road in Guist. The lodges are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and feature slate and copper roofs. Each lodge is square in plan and has a tower at the drive-side angle aligned with the gate piers. There are single-storey wings on the other sides. The main blocks are two storeys high, with single segmental five-light bay windows on the ground floor of the main facades. The drive-side facades have three-bay porticos that serve as pedestrian entrances, featuring semicircular arches on channelled ashlar piers and a plain platband. The upper windows are two-light with stone reveals and mullions. The lodges have wooden bracketed cornices and pyramidal roofs with central stacks. The towers are topped with modillion cornices and copper cupola roofs, which are surmounted by small wooden lanterns with weathervanes. The site includes ornate iron railings and gates, with the main gates supported by square-sectioned stone piers that feature lion's head carvings, modillion cornices, and heraldic beasts on gadrooned mounts. An ornate overthrow displays spiral and leaf motifs. The lodges are flanked by low curved brick walls.
