Description
The Langar-cum-Barnstone War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, located in the churchyard of the Grade I listed parish church of St Andrew, to the south of the chancel. It is made of Doulting stone and features a base of three steps that support a square plinth. The plinth holds a chamfered shaft topped with a cross that has a circular nimbus.
The east and west faces of the plinth are inscribed. The main inscription on the east face honors those who gave their lives in the Great War from 1914 to 1918, listing the names of 16 men who lost their lives and including the quotation: “GLORY HONOUR AND PEACE.” A later inscription on the west face commemorates those who died in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945, along with their names and the phrase: “THEY LOVED NOT THEIR LIVES UNTO DEATH.”
