Description

58 Holywell Hill is a long range of buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. On the right, there is a 16th-century timber-framed building with two storeys and three windows, featuring a jettied first floor and a plastered front. On the left, the 17th-century section has two storeys and two windows, constructed of brick with a plastered ground floor. The first-floor windows on the left section are two-light casements with glazing bars in near-flush, box frames, while the right section has three-light casements in slightly projecting box frames. The ground floor features three shop fronts that appear to be from the 19th century, although they may be later additions. The door to the right of the central shop window has been altered to a window. The entrance on the right has an unusual doorcase with short, fluted columns on high plinths, quasi-Ionic capitals, a cut-work frieze, and a dentil cornice, resembling a piece of furniture, such as a dresser. Nos 36 to 58 (even) form a group.
