Description

The Crown and Anchor is a 15th-century timber-framed building, now incorporated with No. 2 Sopwell Lane. Originally a single-window, two-storey structure, it has a high-pitched, hipped tiled roof. The first floor retains close-studded timbers and a jettied overhang. The ground floor has been brought forward and rebuilt in brick, featuring a reproduction Georgian shop window. The north return displays close studding and visible beam ends, continuing the design of No. 2 Sopwell Lane. A dragon beam at the corner is covered for protection and abuts heavy ground floor ceiling beams within. All timbers are oak. The original roof tiles have been replaced with modern machine tiles.
