Description

No 2 Sopwell Lane is a 16th-century, long, timber-framed building that was formerly a common lodging house. It has a high-pitched tiled roof and features stout, close studding on the overhanging first floor, with visible beam ends and plaster filling. The building is two storeys tall and has eight windows. The ground floor is made of brick, with a brick plinth.

The three left bays on the first floor are plastered and have later sash windows with glazing bars in flush, box frames, along with a 19th-century shop front on the ground floor. The right four bays of the ground floor show close studding, and the ground floor windows are mostly later sashes with glazing bars, except for one wood-mullioned casement window on the right. There are two 19th-century doors and one double carriage door, all in Gothic style, inserted on the ground floor. The five bays on the right side of the first floor feature leaded, two-light casement windows, one of which may be original.

Inside, the building has heavy exposed timbers, including some chamfered and moulded beams made of chestnut, and a stone fireplace with a Tudor arch.
