Description

Bluegates Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with an extension at the rear added in the early 17th century and a front extension from the 20th century. The building features a timber frame with 20th-century pargetted plaster and a plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high, with the main range comprising three bays and a gabled cross wing at the left end. The right two bays are built as two storeys and include four original 18th-century leaded casements, while the upper floor of the cross wing has a small early 17th-century ovolo-mullioned casement. The two right bays have two sets of three-light casements, separated by a principal post in the middle, with the ground floor windows featuring roll-moulded frames. A large mid-16th-century ridge stack with four square shafts is present, along with a 20th-century door set in a four-centred frame.

The rear elevation showcases an early 17th-century gabled stair turret with a three-light casement. The back of the cross wing has small 18th-century mullioned casements, with the right ground floor window set in a shallow projecting bay. The left rear features a two-bay wing, with the rear bay being an early 17th-century addition, containing 18th-century casements of two and three lights. A large stack is situated between the bays.

Inside the cross wing, there is a notable 16th-century fireplace with moulded clunch jambs and an oak lintel, making this farmhouse exceptionally well preserved from the 16th and 17th centuries.
