Description
The Ashwell Further Education Centre, originally known as The Schoolmaster's House, was built as a school by the Merchant Taylor's Company of London in 1681. The building was extended at the front in the 18th century and at the rear around 1870. The main structure is made of local 17th-century red and white brick, which was repaired in the 19th century, and features a plain tile hipped roof. It has two storeys and attics, with large external chimney stacks at both ends. A moulded brick floor band runs around the building, returning as a plain band on the sides. There are two triple-hung sash windows with gauged brick heads, and the entrance features a fielded and flush panel door with a flat bracketed hood. Above the door is a stone plaque with a pediment, inscribed with details about the school's founding. The right front extension, added in the late 18th century, has one sash window and one casement window. The rear has a T-shaped extension with a louvred tiled belfry and ornamental ridge tiles, along with Gothic windows.
